The Steersman

Lewis Block Public Art

The Steersman at Lewis Block Stadium Yards Edmonton Public Art

The Steersman public art installation honours Joseph Lewis, one of the earliest documented Black fur traders in Edmonton over 200 years ago. A highly accomplished canoe man with the Hudson's Bay Company in the early 1800s, he was praised in records as a reliable and steady steersman. Believed to have lived as a free Black man decades before slavery was abolished, Lewis's story reminds us to live with courage and strength.

Lewis Block is named in his honour to remember where we come from and carry forward his spirit of resilience and possibility. His story reflects the journey of many who've chosen to build a new life in Edmonton: bold, entrepreneurial, and focused on creating something lasting.

These are the same values that continue to shape this community today, and we hope that this art piece and Lewis Block serve as a place where people can connect and forge ahead for generations to come.

There is no known picture of Joseph Lewis.
